Of interest are Dieke's published articles from "The Evening Sun" (Balto.) dealing with science and education in the Soviet Union. These were written after a trip to Moscow in 1957. Biographical Note: Gerhard H. Dieke was an authority on spectroscopy and solid state physics and a professor of physics, The Johns Hopkins University. He was born in Rheda, Germany in 1901. He studed at the University of Leiden and received a Ph. D. in physics, the University of California in 1926. Dr. Dieke joined the Physics Department at Hopkins in 1930, and served as chairman of the department, 1950-1965. He was recognized at one of the pioneers in investigating the ...
