Biographical Note: Gerhard H. Dieke was an authority on spectroscopy and solid state physics and a professor of physics, The Johns Hopkins University. He was born in Rheda, Germany in 1901. He studed at the University of Leiden and received a Ph. D. in physics, the University of California in 1926.
